The word bespoke derives from bespeak, meaning 'to ask for' - as in, ask and you shall receive. The word originated on Saville Row, London and referred to the bolt of cloth chosen and put aside to be cut, assembled and built around the very being of the gentleman or lady; the garment becoming part of them, not merely something they were able to gad about in. |
